Fred and I met at a wedding almost exactly 5 years ago on August 7th, 2004. The long standing joke between Fred and I has been that he was the Best Man and I was the Best Dressed!
My cousins were trying to get me to meet Fred and I tried to overlook him. I was a single mother and I was finally accepting this. My daughter and I were in a good place and I was happy! I didn't see myself in a relationship at all at that time. Throughout the day of my cousin's wedding I worked hard at avoiding Fred, I kept my distance. I had to miss the wedding ceremony because I had to work that afternoon, but joined for dinner and the reception later in the evening.
When I arrived the bride and groom were finishing up with pictures and I was to follow them to the hall from there. I got out of my car in my charming evening gown and up came the groom: "You coming to steal the show?" he says to me. I've never felt so inappropriate in my whole life! And along came Fred, he put his arm around me and said: "She's just fine, she's my date!". I laughed, well more like giggled and still felt awkward but for some reason it felt right so I followed the Bride, Groom and my "date" to the wedding reception, LOL!
Dinner came and went and the dancing began. I was sure by then that Fred had forgotten me and I was "safe". I went to draw with the children in a corner and was mingling with family members. I can't remember which song was playing when Fred showed up inviting me on the dance floor. Okay, so I don't dance, everyone knows this, lol. I had to be pushed onto the dance floor but I went, I danced with Fred aka my "date"!
Fred and I must have danced together to every slow song that evening. We even went out afterwards to a local bar and by the end of the night, I was no longer his "date" but rather the group's designated driver! I wound up sleeping next to Fred on a mattress, on the floor, in someone's basement that night because nobody was fit to drive me to my car so that I could go home.
The next morning, the group was late for the breakfast reception so we jumped into cars (I jumped in with Fred) and we headed to the restaurant. We arrived and of course my family members were there to witness... I arrived with Fred - my hair a little messy and wearing the same gown as the night before! We were given a standing ovation by some of our most cherished family members and friends. I think I turned a very dark shade of red when the waiter gave Fred the bill for my breakfast that morning, I still don't think that guy believed me when I said "I'm not with this gentleman"!
Fred and I have been together ever since and I now believe full heartedly that love comes to people when then aren't looking!
Fred and I's courtship followed with a long distance relationship because after the first week he needed to return to Baddeck, Nova Scotia and I was living in Aylmer, Quebec. Over 1600 kms seperated us, but we visited each other monthly. By January 2005 we were taking possession of our first home and I didn't move to Cape Breton until the end of March that same year. When I announced I was moving to Nova Scotia I was asked "why?", I proudly answered: for love!
Life in Baddeck was very different. I had a long drive to and from work over Kelly's Mountain everyday. Fred worked long hours, very long hours and was on-call at night. I have to say that love must conquer all odds because it is what binded Fred and I together. We persevered and we kept on trecking! We only had each other and we needed to count on one another.
Fred was offered a deployment to the Ottawa area in early 2006 and when we sold our house and plans were being finalised for our move to Ottawa, Fred proposed. We were engaged on June 1st, 2006; we moved in to our new home in July 2006 and we haven't looked back. We are very happy in our home and we've been blessed with great fortune ever since. Our daughter, Alicia was born in August 2007 and has completed our wonderful little family. Savannagh and Alicia are both very much daddy's little girls! As for Fred, he hasn't made out too badly... he's got 3 women in his life and we all love him very much!
As I've said many times before... When I count my blessing, I count Fred twice! He's my rock, my everything!
Fred: Anything you'd like to add?
Fred & Melanie
